From the Santa Cruz Surfboards experimental division we present the GDECK. The Jet pack of surfboards. With a skateboard like kick tail and a cambered platform deck the GDECK’s foot positions create more power, control, better angles and comfort in tight turning situations. The GDECK has the same amount of board in different more functional places. This design isn’t meant to float any better, but to have a thinner rail with equal volume. The benefits of a thinner rail are that of sensitivity, bite, speed and release. With the GDECK’s platform out near the rail, it still has the needed stability to pull black out inducing G-Force.

Important Things to Know Before You Buy Your Surfboard

!: Important Things to Know Before You Buy Your Surfboard

Finding surfboards for sale is just about the easiest thing in the world to do. The problem is that surfboards can cost a king's ransom, and when investing that kind of money, you want to be sure about what you are getting. There are many different types of boards to choose from such as longboards, shortboards, paddle boards, and foam boards. Shopping for the right surfboard can be harder than one would think at first glance. You first need to figure out what your skill level is. Different surfboards are made for specific skills, and in the wrong hands can be extremely frustrating or even dangerous.

You also want to be sure to pick out a board that is the right height for you. A board that is too long, and you will lose all maneuverability, and a board that is too short will cause you to sink. You also want to take safety into consideration. If you are buying surfboards for your kids or those of you with bad coordination you might want to invest in a board made of foam, at least until you get the hang of the surfing basics. Some surfboards can be a combination of foam and fiberglass, giving you the best of both worlds.

The next thing you want to consider is whether you want a custom or used board. It is always better to buy a new surfboard if you do not know the source of the used board. There are tons of surfboards for sale, however, they are not always what they appear to be. It is always important to check for dings and imperfections in your new surfboard because the last thing you want to happen is for your brand new board to get waterlogged during your first trip to the beach. The other good aspect of the foam board is that it is super durable and you are more likely to break than it is. Foam boards can take the hits that normal fiberglass cannot; such as hitting a reef or a rock, or the many things you learn to avoid if you're an inexperienced surfer.

Now that you have the ABC's of purchasing your first surfboard, it is time for you to get out there and hit the waves. So get going and find surfboards for sale, whether its a shortboard, longboard, or foam board you are destined to have a good time now that you know the pitfalls and what to look for when buying your brand new board.

How to select Surfboard Fins

There are many types of surfboard fin systems to choose from. Choosing the one that you want is an prominent part of Choosing your surfboard. Fin characteristics as well as the brand of fin law are to be considered.

Most surfboards today come with the removable, as opposed to glassed-in, type of fin. Most brands do not have cross compatible boxes. Boxes are the devices that hold the fin on the surfboard. This makes it prominent to choose the law you want, as it affects all your time to come fin choices for that surfboard.

Surfboard

First, reconsider these fin characteristics:

Part of Totally Bamboo’s Tropical Collection, the Surfboard cutting board is distinctively attractive, super strong, and totally "green"! It offers a festive design and an engrain inlay. For example: bamboo is 16 percent harder than maple, yet easy on your knives, it’s naturally anti-microbial and it’s eco friendly; it holds the promise of a sustainable, cost effective, and ecologically responsible alternative to the widespread clear cutting of our old growth forests. Totally Bamboo uses organically grown Moso bamboo, so you need not worry about harmful pesticides or fertilizers. Plus, this bamboo is not a food source, or a habitat, for the Giant Panda. Totally good for you and totally good for the environment! Board is easy to maintain. Wash with warm water and occasionally use Totally Bamboo’s Revitalizing Oil to extend life and keep it looking beautiful. 23 X 7.5 X 5/8”

Depth - The maximum height of a fin as measured from the lowest covering of the board. This shows how far the fin goes in the water. The hold of the surfboard increases with more depth but commonly makes it harder to turn as well. 3-4 inch depth is standard on tri-fins and longboard singular fins typically have a depth of nine inches. Template - The fin outline. Base - The length of the fin where it joins the surfboard. Addition length adds forward drive, but makes it harder to turn. Shortboard tri-fins ordinarily have a 3.5-4.5 inch base, longboard singular fins are about 6 inches. Foil - The horizontal curve of the fin, measured from the front edge to trailing edge. Rake - The length in the middle of the trailing edge of the fin base and the fin tip. This is the swept back characteristic of the fin. Addition rake increases traction. Tip - The top third of the fin. More tip means more hold. Flex - Stiff fins are faster but flexible fins are easier to turn.

Second, reconsider the brands of surfboard fins available:

Fcs - These fins are the most widely used surfboard fins in the world. The great things about Fcs fins are the huge range and the availability. You can almost always find a transfer at the nearest surf shop. Since Fcs is the most common fin system, most surfboards come with that type of fin box. Fcs makes a huge choice of fins. For fins with a softer edge try Pro-Tech. The are compatible with the Fcs boxes. Installation is with a uncomplicated allen (hex) key. Future - Probably the second most favorite fin law in the Us. They have some of the lightest fin boxes around, weighing in at about 26 grams/box. There are fins law for just about any type of surfboard out there. In particular, time to come fins has an exquisite choice of of Quad fins. There are also abundance of foils to choose from such as Vector, Vector 2, and the Scimitar. time to come fins also setup with a uncomplicated allen key. Lokbox - These surfboard fins have one indispensable benefit over most other fin systems; they are adjustable. You can slide them forward and back to find the sweet spot for you. They are undoubtedly adjusted with a slotted screwdriver. O'Fish'L - This is a snap in fin system. For those that love to experiment, this might be the fin law for you. You could even slap some fins in your boardshorts and turn them in the water. 4Wfs - The "Four Way Fin System". Four ways as in forward/back, cant/flair, toe-in/toe-out, or an entire fin replacement. The only question with this law is there are so many choices you might go crazy tweaking just one set of fins.

If your having a surfboard convention shaped for you, an additional one consideration is the type of fin law the shaper has worked with before. It might be great to go with one he or she knows well rather than risk an incorrect Installation of an unfamiliar one.

With so many choices of fins/companies available, you shouldn't have a question finding something close to what you want. Study the distinct brands. They should have descriptions of the type of surf singular fins work best in. They ordinarily have charts available for recommended weights of riders as well.

Once you have a law you like, it's nice if all your surfboards use those types of fins. It makes it easier and economy to build a decent range of fins that you can swap around and enjoy.

Fiberglass Surfboard building Materials

The former fiberglass surfboard uses polyurethane foam, and it is hand shaped or shaped with a Cnc machine using a polyurethane foam core. Weighted fiberglass is laid over the foam core, and then laminated with polyester resin. Next, the board is sanded to the right level of smoothness and cured. They have been used since the 1960's and have great flexibility and performance.

Another type of foam that is used for development surfboards is expanded polystyrene foam, and it keeps its shape using an open cell that takes in water like a sycophant does if exposed to water. They have sure limitations, like low resistance to compression, poor strength, and it is hard to shape since it is made with small round particles. Epoxy resin is used to laminate this type of foam.

Surfboard

Extruded polystyrene core foam is made with a cell core that is closed, so it is best at repelling water and is stronger so compression and damage are reduced. They also have flex patterns that allow for a much greater response when placed under pressure. This kind of building is used to make all higher ability surfboards. Epoxy resin is what is used to laminate these surfboard types.

Fiberglass matt is available in assorted grades that are talked about using weight in ounces. When the cloth weight is higher, the board is made stronger. However, this also makes the weight of the board much heavier, not so much from the cloth, but because more resin is needed to bond the fiberglass matt to the board that makes the hard shell that is apparent on the shell of the surfboard. Most of the time, a fiberglass surfboard like this will have dual layers on the first deck, and a singular layer on the bottom. There is more cloth needed on the deck so that the surfer's elbows, feet, and knees are protected.

Some fiberglass surfboard builders have attempted to build boards using a Styrofoam core instead of polyurethane, and use an epoxy resin instead of polyester. This makes the board have a much lighter weight, best impact resistance, and stronger construction. The use of epoxy resin also makes less toxic fumes as well. The bad things about development these types of boards are that they take a long time to make, cost much more than former boards, and have a complex process for manufacture. Sometimes, graphite cloth is used instead of fiberglass. However, this costs even more and can only be made in the color black.

New techniques to development surfboards use a Computer controlled shaping machine that can fully sand and shape a blank in just 25 minutes, instead of the many hours needed for hand shaping. Drawbacks to this are that the machine is expensive and has to be reprogrammed each time a new design is needed. an additional one way that has been tried, is using a premade surfboard as a pattern, and then development the shell and filing it with foam. It takes about 4.5 hours to terminate the whole thing. It is very high-priced to make it in this way, and new designs can only be made when there is already a fiberglass surfboard there to use as a pattern.

2008 Surfboard Models

Image : http://www.flickr.com

More and more models have surfaced since the first wooden surf board made of koa wood by the Hawaiians. They have diverse shapes, colors, made of a mixture of materials with additional pieces like fins or leashes attached, depending on the situations.

There is one thing that hasn't changed since the beginning or surfing and that is the shaping of the board. Even the modern board is hand shaped by professionals after they have been molded into a rough shape. They basically make them out of polyurethane foam and cover it with fiberglass and resin. Recently, boards made of balsa and polystyrene cores have increasingly become more popular. The majority of them have between 2 and 5 kg in weight. In recent years one or more fins have been added to enhance directionality and stability.

Generally, modern surfboard can be either longboards - of eight or more feet - or shortboards - of 5 to 7 feet. Longboard are thicker and wider, with a more rounded nose while short board are shorter, thinner with a more pointed nose, usually easier to maneuver. Shortboard are also known as "Thrusters" and tend to have 3 fins - although a surfer can choose to attach as many fin as he wants to his board. Other types of surfboard are Gun, Fish, Egg, hydrofoils or fun-boards.

The Gun surfboard is especially designed for paddling easier in the big waves and has from 7 to 12 feet in length. It is thin with a single fin, making it look like a shortboard in shape but with a longboard's size. The Fish surfboard is very short and has less than 6 feet in length, with twin fin set up. It has developed in other models like Skip Frye, Steve Brom and Rich Pavel, which are best used for small waves. The Egg surfboard is a hybrid of 6 to 8 feet in length has tail shape and a rounded nose for smaller waves, as well. This isn't the best choices for doing tricks or displaying major performance but it surely is a lot of fun. That is why it's highly recommended to beginners.

Longboard are single finned and can reach 12 feet. Some of them are called noseriders because they allow the surfer to walk to the tip and do what is called "nose ride". The most popular longboard is called Malibu (or Mal) and there are also Mini Mals. The most impressive longboard are the Olos, which can reach 14 feet and are made of wood, weighing 32 kg.

Funboards are very flexible to stabilize and have more floatation than a shortboard. They are midsized, suitable for beginner or amateurs. For beginners a Malibu board is the best option - if you choose to go to a surfing school you will most likely star with this one, also called a Foamie surfboard. A Pop-out board is a good alternative to a cheaper surfboard that floats very well.

The construction of the ACS line starts with an extremely durable polyethylene shell that is then filled with polyurethane foam. This is the same foam used in standard surfboard construction. To ensure that the finished surfboard is an exact reproduction of the original proven shape, the entire procedure takes place in a mould that maintains the shape of the board. The result is a virtually ding-proof surfboard that makes it easy for a wide range of people to experience the thrill of surfing.

±1±: Best Buy I have ridden, shaped, and owned many boards from 9 foot guns to 10 foot longboards and everything in between. I have owned two bic boards. the 6 10 and the 9 0. I would consider both of these boards excellent boards. bic has two styles of construction. half their boards are constructed with more performance in mind-lighter and more refined. the two boards i have are in this catagory. the 6 10 is a very versatal board. paddles well, is loose, lite, fast and durable. i would consider it an excellent travel board. i have ridden it from knee high to double overhead indonesia. the only complaint i have is that it doesn't handle too well in extremely steep bigger surf just like any wide tailed board with a lot of rail curve.
As for the longboard, It is probably one of my favorite boards and performs extremely well as a high performance longboard. it loves big playful surf and also performs well in smaller waves. it is not a cruiser longboard like their 10 0. both of these boards have refined rails, good bottom contours, are lightweight and extremely durable. My only complaint is that I buckled my longboard and they are hard to find in my area. One more complaint- i wish they made a gun for larger, hollow waves- i would buy one in a second. Body weight plays huge influnce on surfboard function. what performs well for one person could seem like a slug to someone lighter. and vise versa the same board in pumping conditions could perform even better for someone with more weight on them. I weight 170 and would recomend these to anyone 160 and higher. They would be good beginner and intermediate boards for lighter riders. just like any board, every board has it's function and these boards perform very well in a variety of conditions. I will always try and keep these boards in my quiver. on Sale!
