I can see that all other reviewers have never ridden this board before writing their review. They just assume this must be a beginner's board for this kind of price. The truth is, once you actually ride it, you will find this is a great board.
First, there is one reviewer said that this board has too much float and you could not duck dive with it. I bet he never rides this board, or he is very light weight. I weight 175lb and I found this board sinks into the water all the time. Duck dive is not a problem at all.
Other reviewers said this board is only for kook. The reality is no matter what board you use, if you dare to compete with them for waves, you are a kook. They just don't want you to get in the water to compete with them for waves. They want you to pay lots of money for a custom board and get frustrated so you can quit surfing as soon as possible. The truth is, if you don't look closely at the board (in 5 ft), you can not tell it is not a custom board. In the water, it just performs as good as a custom board. I guss many of the other reviewers are surfboard shapers or surf shop owners. They want to make more money from you.
Now, let me tell you why I think this board is great.
I have another exopy surfboard. If you did enough study, you would know the epoxy board supposed to be durable. Well, it is not! The other day I and another two guys were surfing on a big wave toward the shore. After we dropped into the water, the next two big waves drove our boards to the rocks along the shore. All three board (two epoxy one fiber glass) were seriously damaged. If you ask around, you will find this kind of things happen a lot. The glass on the surfboard is very fragile! It break easily when hits a rock.
What is good for this BIC board is that it really durable!! It is made by some kind of plastic. The material feel like the plastic pipe in your house but the surface is smooth to cut through the wave. When it hits to a rock, it just get a very small mark. It will not break. It is much more flexible than glass on epoxy or fiber glass board so it won't break that easily. During the big day, you don't have to worry that much about your surfboard. You can focus more on your own safety rather than the safety of your board.
Another great thing for this board is the price. I got this board from Green Room Surf. They have very good prices for BIC surfboards. I picked it up from their store in Newport Beach to save the shipping. Talk to Greg. His service is really good and he won't push you to buy a more expensive surfboard like other surf shop.
If I need to buy another surfboard again, I will buy BIC surfboard. It is cheap and maintenance free. You can ask other surfers how much money they have spent to fix their surfboard and you will appreciate the meaning of "maintenance free".
Overall, I give this surfboard "five stars". It has the same performance as a fiber glass board without the maintenance problem. And the price is good!
